{"id":166,"date":"2016-05-14T22:37:58","date_gmt":"2016-05-14T20:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/?p=166"},"modified":"2016-05-17T20:14:56","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T18:14:56","slug":"kap-der-guten-hoffnung","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/2016\/05\/14\/kap-der-guten-hoffnung\/","title":{"rendered":"Kap der Guten Hoffnung"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cape of Good Hope is the most south-western point of the African continent &#8212; but not the most southern, which is <a title=\"Kap Agulhas\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kap_Agulhas\">Cape Agulhas<\/a>. It&#8217;s best known for the tourist pictures of the signs with the GPS coordinates on it \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>What it&#8217;s not so well-known for (as we rather arrive by plane, than by sailing boat) is the fact that there&#8217;s many sharp rocks protruding up towards the water surface&#8230; Since back from the early settlements at Cape Town there have been lighting fires to welcome &amp; warn ships and keep them off coast.<br \/>\nAs a tourist one learns a lot of things, some useful even; one is, that as late as 1911 was the last major ship wreckage off the Cape of Good Hope, which spurred the creation of the New Lighthouse &#8212; at a <strong>lower<\/strong> point, so that it is seen <strong>later<\/strong>, i.e. at a farther distance south.<\/p>\n<p>Second is, this wreckage of the SS Lustinia, only 8 out of 774 persons died &#8212; when a life boat sunk. The captain and crew did a great job of getting everyone off the job in an orderly fashion: The Captain coined the phrase &#8222;Children and women first&#8220;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_167\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MG_1053_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167\" src=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MG_1053_small-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"New Lighthouse at Cape of Good Hope.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MG_1053_small-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MG_1053_small-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MG_1053_small.jpg 972w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Lighthouse at Cape of Good Hope.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are two strong currents, the warm Agulhas current from North East from the Indian Ocean and the cold Benguala coming from West from the Atlantic Ocean.<br \/>\nOn Wikipedia it is even suggested, that the warm <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agulhas_Current\">Agulhas current<\/a> transports twice the water and warmth than the Gulf Stream which dominates the climate of Northern Europe.\u00a0 These currents meat around the Cape of Good Hope and that&#8217;s why there is such a diversity on marine wildlive &#8212; and whale-watching.<\/p>\n<p>PS: Yes, that picture is back then, with my trip to Muizenberg\/the Cape; when the shot of the Ostriches below was done.
