Starting with crispy clear air and bright sun at Tokara Deli, we hiked for about 3 hours (mostly in the shadow of the mighty mountain) to get a wonderful panorama across the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek valley.<\/p>\n<p>The hike passes first through the vineyards of Tokara and Thelema, then to divert into the wilderness of a forest of Protea, which was burnt in the vast fires of last year (at higher altitude, some Proteas have restarted to grow from the burnt trunks):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030657_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-641 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030657_small-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"P1030657_small\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030657_small-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030657_small-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030657_small.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030665_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-642 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030665_small-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"P1030665_small\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030665_small-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030665_small-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030665_small.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still there was frost at this southern slope, but what was particularly beautiful were the carnivorous plants, with tiny drops of nectar trapping flies:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-632\" src=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030676_small.jpg\" alt=\"P1030676_small\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030676_small.jpg 512w, http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030676_small-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The heavy rains the days before had cleansed the air, offering breath-taking views. Consider, Simonsberg wtih 1399m is higher than table mountain. Take this little panorama, where one may see Tokara far below, the whole of Stellenbosch and the Cape-flats, including Cape Town with the majestic Tafelberg:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030704.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-644\" src=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/P1030704.jpg\" alt=\"P1030704\" \/><\/a>We had an hour-long feast with Boerewors, Karoo cheese, Beer and chocolate from the <a href=\"http:\/\/raytec.org\/wordpress\/2016\/07\/23\/the-neigbourgoods-market-old-biscuit-mill-woodstock-ct\/\">Neighborgoods Market<\/a>.
