Oldtimer in Muizenberg

This beautiful oldtimer parked in front of the colourful houses at the beach in Muizenberg. It took quite a many shots not to have any bystanders inspecting the car — and have the driver take his seat! But alas, no HDR, not Stitch not even a RAW ,-)) Just the plain JPG from the camera 🙂

Word of Caution to Tourist: Do not park at the Waterfront. Just walk, enjoy the sun, give the parking-lot guy at the parking lot a few Rand — and don’t waste Your time cruising the Beach Rd. waiting for the unlikely parking spot to open up.
This oldtimer’s Parking was taken in about 300ms.

While I do like these Peacocks running about Welgevonden Estate, I do not accept their left-overs on my porch 🙂 . And yes, Mr. Peacock, I do have evidence (apart from the obvious left-overs): by now I have 3 of Your feathers.
I will ask my land-lords, whether I may borrow their dog „Piccolo“ for a day or two…

Unfortunately, as the name suggests, Piccolo is of rather small breed 🙂

Sunrise and Sunset

The sunrises and sunsets were just phenomenal! For the former, I did use Photomatix, for the sunset it’s just another round of playing with RT on the RAW… The RAW is just so much nicer then the preprocessed JPG…

Wine and more

There’s so many wine-estates worth mentioning, I’ll try to name just a that few visited so far and add to the list later on:

  • Tokara in the evening

Tokara Wine-Estate is beautifully located at the road from Stellenbosch to Frenschhoek, one has a wonderful view over the valley and may enjoy wine, lunch and in their remarkable restaurant dinner (which I haven’t tried, yet 🙂 )
For lunch, I had a good salad with chicken and fruit juice, just because it wasn’t yet time to taste their wine.
    But I bought a Tokara Merlot 2015.

  • The Boschendal Estate is located at the road to Frenschhoek and features apart from Wines, a beautiful restaurant, rooms for conferences and lodges for longer stays (all of which I again haven’t tried, … yet), as well as a nice little store with self-made marmelade, good bread and local produce.

    Driveway at Stark-Condé

    Driveway at Stark-Condé

  • Stark Condé is a Winery in the valley of Joenkershoek, where they grow most of their wines, but they also feature wines with grapes from other valleys, e.g. a great Chenin Blanc which originates from higher altitudes from the Bottelary Hills region.
The wine tasting (5 wines for 40Rand) is in the hut on the middle of this small lake.
This stitch is from 38 RAW images processes with RT, then fed into Hugin — this time no extra Control Points necessary… Well if You look closely, I should’ve included some. The final image created again has 22022 × 5745 pixels in a mere 1GB file, so a bit too big to upload and include 🙂

  • The De Meye winery is located a bit on the out-skirts of the typical region. I tried their Merlot and Chardonnay — the latter one they produce without oak barrels specifically for the German market. They advertise their German reseller, which offers discounts as well.

Wrong City

This week-end, I had a rental car — and was driving into the Karoo; a desert with its own beauty… There’s rough hills (up to 1700m), there’s arid land (which in places still allows sheep-farming), but in the west, there’s cultivated valleys with vineyards.  I learned that overall 1/3 of the South-African land is covered by the Karoo.

The Great Karoo

The Great Karoo

On my ride, I listened to South-Africa Radio from Cape-Town — and their main news contained a report about the new party „Alternative für Deutschland“ (AfD) having hold their convention, where… At the new Exhibition Halls in Stuttgart!
Why there?
Yes, of course they gathered many new voters and unfortunately were getting 15,1% of the votes, but hey, to me Stuttgart is the wrong city. Of course, they faced opposition by demonstrators…

As I have been addressed by my SA colleagues and asked about this political party and what’s „happening in Stuttgart“, here’s the result from the March‘ 2016 elections [1] in the state of Baden-Württemberg (thanks Excel for making this easy & hard at the same time):

Election BW 2011

Election in BW in 2011

Election in BW in 2016

Election in BW in 2016

Before the election of 2011 the main influences were dissatisfaction with the previous government of CDU+FDP under president Mr. Stefan Mappus (state re-acquiring the share of the Electricity company EnBW from french EDF, handling of demonstrations of „Stuttgart 21“), as well as the shock from Japanese Fukushima, the Green Party gained 12.5% of votes. This ended the ~60 year lasting government of the conservative Christian Democratic Union in the state of Baden-Württemberg!
This past election in March 2016 were mainly under the impression of the so-called Refugee crisis (over 1 Mio. of refugees mainly from Syria, Afghanistan, but also other nations arriving in Germany) and events during the new-year celebration that may be subsumed under „Cologne attacks“…
What needs to be pointed out, is the fact, that the CDU once again lost many votes (down 12%), but also the SPD lost a tremendous 10,4% considering they are governing at the state- and at the national level — however both „large“, national parties have difficulties making their work known and visible. It seems though, that the type of voting in the state of Baden-Württemberg (one vote for one candidate — which most often belongs to one particular party) in essence boiled down to the question: are You satisfied with the work of the dominant party and it’s Minister, Mr. Winfried Kretschmann, who has been dubbed the „Blackest of all Greens“ (aka the most conservatives) 🙂 . And yes, it seems people are satisfied with the government’s state of affairs.

Nevertheless, I feel ashamed, that Stuttgart was in the news in SA specifically for hosting this party’s congregation.

Right StartRight start on the wrong foot 🙂 What in the world? I mean, I didn’t weigh this pack in front of me, but hey they sure crammed those cereals into that package… Might as well have sat on it…
Next time, reduce the size of the box as well… But then I wouldn’t buy it, since the box right next to it in the shelve seems so much bigger. Hahaha.

Home

This week-end of the 1st of May, I moved into our new house here in Stellenbosch; and I am glad, I may call it home right away. It is such a lovely, well-thought out, personal and cared-for space:

_MG_1347_48_49_50_51_Vibrant_smallAs I couldn’t wait for Elke and Jonathan to see, I immediately took pictures after picture to create HDRs out of them to show. And You know, the sun is shining so brilliantly across the horzion, that I couldn’t really stop ,-)
I was so grateful to my landlords, I sent them pictures of their home and shared with them the joy of HDR with Photomatix ,-)

What a difference to the previous apartement, which had it’s virtues (like walking-distance to work, shopping and dining, whatever) but all that does not bear comparison to a sunny home:_MG_1399_400_401_402_403_Painterly5_small

_MG_1423_smallPS: You know, at home we have this space for post-cards and memorabilia, it was fun to recognize one of those saying that are just true… And that we nevertheless need to be reminded of every once in a while 🙂

The Rainbow nation

On 27th of April was the public holiday „Freedom Day“ commemorating the first free and open elections, which finally and peacefully ended the Apartheid regime back in 1994. Unfortunately and to my surprise, there were not any celebrations officially organized in Stellenbosch, rather business as usual. Even at the Tourist Information Center, folks didn’t hear of any event nearby. There were however, students of all colors joining for a Picnic, celebrating. I now learned, that the last official celebrations were in 2014, commemorating the 20 year anniversary — and that it is not usual in a small town to celebrate that occasion; compare that to „Tag der Wiedervereinigung“ which similarly gets little attention.

But could it be, that people are somewhat reluctant to celebrate?
When reading in the many online forums, one sure gets the impression, that tensions are growing for real — of course one has to note that online forums tend to drag out the worst esp. provided there’s anonymity. Nevertheless, who could blame frustration on all sides: as the economy is sluggishly gaining ground again at 1.3% [1], after a long decline of the Rand (since Q3/2015 down ~10%) [2] and an overall unemployment of ~25% (out of a population of ~55 Mio) [3, 4, 5]…

It certainly does not help watching the Videos of the farce in Parliament [6].  „Kindergarden“ is the nicest of adjectives, waste of tax-payer’s money fits better, corruption seems widespread at the top [7] (Do any search for „Gupta Zuma“ or „Zupta“)…
Still, there are decent voices and forces, bringing this to light and justice (as was done about a week ago by the highest court, ruling on Zuma’s spending of tax-payer’s money on his „Fire Pool“ and Chicken farm).

Now, I’ve been asked more than one time, whether „it is safe“? And yes, I do feel safe. Of course, I am talking & walking in the cocoon of Stellenbosch; which like other small University towns (like Constance 🙂 ) is certainly different than „the real world“. Some call it even „Little Europe“ (see below [8]; but this is only true with regard to the beautiful houses, I might add). But I’ve been to Cape Town (yeah, of course during the day only, but not only the touristic routes). I felt safe.

Is poverty visible? Certainly so! And that includes all folks; is the likelihood of a white person become impoverished lower than that of others: probably so, but again (even though this being unscientific, limited and personal observation), I have had white ragged beggars asking for donations as well as seeing a black person drive a Porsche Cayenne.
Does this wealth distribution resemble the overall population distribution (80% blacks, 8% Coloured, 8% White, ~2% Indian/Asian)? Of course not.

But hey, this needs to change and it does change! There certainly are affluent Blacks shopping at Eikestad Mall and quite a diverse group of students on Campus, Stellenbosch University I am told has been opening up over the years (albeit slowly, and there being way to go). There’s couples of mixed relations (as the StatsSA calls them) among students and older mixed couples walking their kids at the Mall. And there is prospect of business developing (shops opening, lots of construction, investment etc.). There’s a very good speech at the Stellenbosch University’s Conference [8] — that makes one think!
There’s a diversity of 11 official(!) languages, English unites them. And just today, I have been at a Rugby game of young boys — of all races, with a black coach shouting encouragement — in Afrikaans.
That’s why it’s called Rainbow Nation.

Into the SUN

Stellenbosch Campus in the morning sun

Stellenbosch Campus in the morning sun

Stellenbosch University is often abbreviated SUN; so e.g. including the FQDN and email addresse add nicely up to rainerkeller _at_ sun.ac.za [1]. SUN is the proper abbreviation alright, when walking along campus as the Sun was reaching up over the horizon. There’s this one moment, the sun started hitting the roof of the building. This is shot exactly here at the statue of J.H. Marais.

20160411_082450_smallerSo walking towards campus with the morning fog rising, I was walking right into this scene here.

Shooting photos into the sun is always a bit tricker/riskier. Playing with exposure time, now is much simpler, then it used to be; and even more so with this nice custom firmware 400plus that’s now on the Canon D400. Works very nice, e.g. to make Automatic Exposure Bracketing with the wink of the hand in front of the camera’s IR sensor.

This allows to take multiple shots, e.g. for HDR without a proper tripod but rather placing the camera on the roof of a car.

V.O.C. Kruithuis

V.O.C. Kruithuis

Now, HDR is possible of course with the mobile phone’s internal camera; when not zooming, they even make decent pictures, like this one of the V.O.C Kruithuis shot right here, straight into the sun.
The old powder used to be the amory of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.); now the house now belongs to the Stellenbosch Museum. BTW this shot with the Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) nicely shows, what the HDR can cope with and what not… Having this very same shot with the Canon and a -2/+2 bracket would have provided more detail; but then again, the Samsung was able to lighten the churches walls.

Franschhoek valley in sunset.

Franschhoek valley in sunset.

Last week-end (having a car) I did this trip to Franschhoek — that is the „French corner“: Huguenots, whose presence is still visible today. French street names or written as house names in Franschhoek, French last names. Also the names of the wineries like „La Motte“ or „Provence“ reminds one of their heritage. The valley is beautiful too. And it being evening, it allowed a shot otherwise not possible in Stellenbosch (as the valley opens up towards the West). This shot was stored as RAW and then converted using RawTherapee.

As said, the Stellbosch is situated basically between two hill ranges and the entry to the valley of Jonkershoek. Driving towards Franschhoek, one has to  traverse the mountain pass — and coming back from the trip to Franschhoek I was driving right over the pass into the sunset. That was an amazing view — and hard to capture on camera. While some of the single pictures turned out „nice“, only a stitch of HDR can capture the view from the top of the Graff Wine estate down to Stellenbosch. Enjoy.

[1] Now incidently, me having typed many more UK- than ZA-email addresses so far, this led me to store a colleague’s address as sun.ac.uk — and send him dozens (well almost) emails — which all were discarded in the World-Wide Wasteland somewhere. No reply, no unknown address, etc.

Trees

Sidewalk along Victoria Street in the Afternoon.

Walking to my work-place in the morning leads me along these beautiful alleys shaded large oak trees. Stellenbosch is known for these Oak tree alleys — and Stellenbosch University has the oak leave in its Logo.

The University’s Biology department also manages the Botanical Garden, which houses an impressive set of Bonsai trees, which started in the 1960s. Since then, they have created the first African bonsai styles, like a miniature version of the Baobab tree and of flat-crown trees.

Now, not being an expert on trees, I believe the tree in parking lots of the „Admin A“ building are flat-crown trees as well:

20160414_165000_Richtone(HDR)_smallWhile just across from this one, there’s another tree:20160414_164913_small

20160404_140501_smallThe funniest of the tries however is this species, which seems to always hang in there in various directions — but never straight to the sky 🙂 Seen it two times in Stellenbosch (one close to the Dept. of Eng., one next to the Sports fields of the University). In the background is again Stellenbosch mountain, back then covered in clouds.

PS: This articles head-line picture shows a stitch off of the bridge over Merriman Avenue — sided also by lots of palm and oak trees.

PPS: Update, this morning, we again have the Autumn fog rising — providing a magnificient view from office: the trees evaporating into the fog one by one in the distance:

Hike onto Stellenbosch Mountain

Stellenbosch Mountain humbly from below

Today, I planned to hike the Stellenbosch mountain. On my previous pictures (e.g. the view from office) it is not included, but it is even closer to the city than the Simonsberg.
So walking three blocks from downtown, crossing the bridge and walking along the river towards the soccer/rugby field, I have this magnificient view of what’s up next: steep incline 🙂

And as there’s not a cloud in the sky, I am glad to have sun-screen with me. Thankfully, a colleague at University gave me good advice on the various trails, so I quickly turn after the sports-field into the hiking area through the forresting area of the bio-department of the University straight up the hill.

All along the way towards the ridge, which I am to follow later on, I hear drums beating a steady rythm: some students are sitting on a prominent outlook and have a good time playing music and chatting (actually on above’s picture it’s the hump next to the left lamp-post).
This is a good first stop and gladly I drinking from my 2l of water…

The next stop is at the saddle-point where the nice, grass and brushes, easy-going hike is about to end. At this saddle-point, there’s a small house next to a larger antenna installation, with network repeaters and dishes, that seem to relay networks — the outside door is open, so one may sneek-peek into the interior to see in total twelve 12V car batteries tight to the solar panels on the roof and lots of switches blinking away.

The view — even though the altitude is not that high is amazing, already (please note, even at this much reduced scale, the image has 6079×322 pixels, so please click on it):

360° panorama towards the valley.

360° panorama towards the valley of Stellenbosch and Joenkershoek Valley.

On the way up, I am glad to find stones-piled on top of each other on larger boulders; friendly reminders that this is the (one of many) path(s). Otherwise, now I am alone.

Except for this one rabbit, that panics from underneath a stone right into my feet! He panics, I panic, we both are punting and rushing away… No time for a picture, mister. Silly rabbit. One can tell by the many left-overs on the ground, that he’s many buddys, too.
And foes: under a large boulder, in the sand one can clearly make out the path of a snake.
At around noon, I am at the top — well not directly the top, that would’ve been another 150m. Instead I am at 1051m and am done: there’s a large boulder to sit on — and a picture-perfect view. One may see Cape-Town’s Table Mountain, the ocean’s waves rolling in to the south and the next destination Simonsberg Nature Reserve ,-)
Enjoy.

View from Stellenbosch Mountain at 1051m

View from Stellenbosch Mountain at 1051m

On my way down, some more animals crossed my way: the Dassies. One was warning his two pals to hide — again from their remainders in their hide, there must be many more!
Then a thin white snake was sneaking underneath a stone and hid-away — thank goodness.
And finally a nice lizard that was kind enough to wait for me preparing the camera and finally being able to shoot the image 🙂

Stellenbosch Library

For virtually every building, every floor and every room, one has to have one’s SUN-card (Stellenbosch University), which has the credentials and details of the owner on it (plus a photo).
Thanks to Pieter who was of great help finding the „Student Help Center“ — it’s then available within 5 minutes. However to get into the Student Help Center, one has to have such an access card — and on it the correct permissions… So, well we waited for someone to let us in 🙂

What’s noteworthy about this access card, though, is that access to Stellenbosch Library has separate credentials, as does the „Carnegie Research Commons„, which is for PostGrad students, only.

Bird-of-Paradise Flowers

Bird-of-Paradise Flowers

This room is equipped with nice work-desks, PCs at work-desks, separate meeting-rooms, video-conferencing rooms, round-tables for discussions, sofa’s and chaise-longues to get comfortable at the window with a water and a coffee-bar.
Outside, they planted a row of bird-of-paradise flowers.

In the summer, it helps being two floors underground.

PS: The headline picture above shows the campus‘ oldest Buildings „Ou Hoofgebou“ built in 1866 in the morning sunlight on my way to work.

Stellenbosch arrival

Stellenbosch is a really beautiful town — and I’ve only seen a few streets and buildings so far. From the west of the city’s center Andringa Street and it’s Pubs & Restaurants, it is only a few blocks down to find oneselve in the midst of Stellenbosch University with it’s old beautiful buildings, the broad and tree-covered allays  — and this amazing library.

Built underneath the plaza „Jan S. Marias Plein„, this library offers books on end, and a most-amazing Carnegie Research room with separate work-spaces, lounge chairs, chaise longue, coffee bar and a separate rooms for meetings and videoconferencing. Ideal to work, study along and discuss with others at the same time…

House on VanRiebeck St.

„House on VanRiebeck St.“

Right on the Van Riebeck St. one finds the entry to the beautiful „Botanical Gardens“ of the University. The SUN prides itselve about the garden and very rightfully so.

The houses on the street have very nice vegetation as well, various trees and bushes that start to turn their colorful leaves as Autumn commences.

Sunday was my first day in Stellenbosch, my first walk around the town. Many more will follow.

This entry’s picture above is a stitch from various pictures of the view of my office.
